Doctor Horrible's Sing-Along Blog

Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog

In the spring of 2009, I directed the first authorized stage adaptation of Doctor Horrible's Sing-Along Blog at Tufts University.

My production concept was to create a "live-action comic book" in which live actors interacted with hand-drawn comic book-style art (projected behind the actors using to the Tufts Center for Scientific Visualization) to play up the show's campy superhero roots.

Dr. Horrible tells the story of the wanna-be super-villain Dr. Horrible and his attempts to get into the Evil League of Evil. While pulling a heist, he inadvertantly introduces the girl of his dreams to his arch-nemesis, the super-hero Captain Hammer. I was interviewed for an article on the production featured in the Tufts E-News online magazine, which may be viewed here.

Below are a selection of production photos as well as a viral promotional video we filmed.

tick, tick... BOOM!

tick, tick... BOOM!  tells the story of Jon, a composer struggling to come to terms with his rapidly deteriorating personal life and his lack of artistic success on the eve of his 30th birthday. An autobiographical piece by Jonathan Larson (the author of Rent), tick, tick... BOOM!   examines the relationship between community and art and the importance of artistic passion.

Since the musical began its life as a one-man show performed by Larson himself, the libretto ebbs and flows as a stream of consciousness; characters, scenes, and locations float in and out of the narrative at Jon's slightest whim. Because of this, my production was incredibly minimalistic; a movable keyboard and two piano benches comprised the set, allowing the show to move as fluidly as Jon's thoughts.
